Planter Box Workshop and Wicking Bed Demo

Cost: $30

Location

Hope Garden

8 Riverbank Road
New Lynn, Auckland 0600

About this Event

Create a great-looking and functional planter box with reclaimed wood in this Power Tools 101 class, then join a wicking bed demonstration using the berry boxes at Hope Teaching Garden.

You will leave with your planter box and some great new woodworking skills, as well as a good understanding of how wicking beds work and the principles behind them. You will learn how to safely use tools, and our experienced tutor will provide tips that will help you get started on your own creative projects.

Tools that will be covered in this workshop are a jig saw, a power drill, and a sander.

About the wicking bed section of the class:

Wicking beds and pots water themselves from a reservoir of water. They use less water than conventional raised beds and maintain soil moisture consistency, which is great for plant health and resilience.

You will learn:

  • the benefits of wicking beds and pots and how they work.
  • different types of wicking beds and pots
  • what you need to know to make your own.

There will be a health and safety briefing at the start of the workshop to inform participants of safety precautions before we begin using tools. All participants must wear covered shoes and non-flowing clothing. Some work may be outdoors, so please bring a sun hat and sunscreen.

The workshop will provide the following:

  • Health and safety briefing:
  • Step-by-step use of all tools
  • Where to extend yourself for Tools 102
  • Personal attention where required

* Please note that children are not able to attend with parents due to health and safety requirements.

* Please note that you need to arrive on time for the health and safety briefing to be able to take part in the rest of the class.
