About this Event

Bananas are surprisingly easy to grow, but are very heavy feeders that require plenty of nutrients to thrive. Planted in a specific way, they offer a great low-maintenance composting option for those with some a little space.

Learn about the benefits of this composting method – one that can effectively compost all your garden and food waste, but also provide you with a nutrient-dense, healthy (and delicious) food source.

Join Richard Lee, EcoMatters Food and Nature Team leader at Hope Garden as he outlines how to establish a backyard Banana swale compost; what to plant to make it highly productive; and how to feed the swale system.

Utilising food scraps collected from our Rosebank Business Association Waste Audit programme, garden waste and other compostable inputs, this will be a practical session laying down a fresh compost bed into a newly dug swale system, as well as a demonstration of how to add layers of compostable material to an established swale bed.

Richard will also demonstrate how to manage your stand of bananas for maximum yield.

PLEASE BRING:

Gloves, sturdy shoes or boots, a raincoat, hat and water bottle.
