Kai Whau

Nau mai haere mai, welcome to Kai Whau, which supports locally-led kai projects to connect and strengthen our Whau communities. 

Kai Whau has been running since 2015 and has already supported many community-led initiatives with funding, and has created a film sharing stories about kai in the Whau area.

Workshops and events

Based at Hope Garden on the banks of the Whau River, we will be offering learning opportunities through educational workshops, including: 

  • Practical composting
  • DIY systems
  • Raised and container gardening
  • Water harvesting
  • Food forests
  • Greenhouse construction and management
  • Harvesting, preparing, cooking and storing food
  • Love Food Hate Waste
  • Fruit trees maintenance and pruning
  • Soil management and regeneration

Outreach to schools and community

We are also working with schools and communities in the Whau area with education and learning opportunities around the following:

  • ShareWaste and composting

  • Seedlings and microgreens

Kai Whau is supported by the Whau Local Board, as part of its commitment to support local communities to uphold the principle of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and to take local action to ensure our natural environment is protected and enhanced.

Kai in the Whau film

Kai in the Whau – Then and Now takes a journey back in time to discover the stories of the Whau’s pioneering food producers, through to the people who are working to increase access to good food locally today.

Local filmmaker Davian Lorson was commissioned to create this film with funding from the Whau Local Board.
