The Community Zero Waste Hui has been a yearly event since 2015. It is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to come together to network, share skills, inspire each other, learn new things and be updated on Council business.
The objectives of the hui are:
- Strengthening the partnership approach
- Strengthening and activating community-led approach
- Providing meaningful interaction for everyone involved
- Showcasing and celebrating the growing movement and work to date
We will also be championing our environmental heroes at the Zero Waste Awards Night, which will be held on the same day.
Community Zero Waste Hui 2018
The theme of this year's hui is "The Edge Effect". The zero waste movement is often at the forefront of social, environmental and economic innovation and, just like edges are in natural spaces, the movement is full of creativity and diversity, bursting with enthusiasm and life. We will explore some of the innovations of thought and practice and create space for conversations that may spark new ideas and partnerships.
This year, the event will take place at Zeal West in Henderson, West Auckland on Wednesday 25 July 2018. The Hui will take place from 9.30am-3.30pm. Doors open at 6.30pm for the Awards, and the programme will run from 7-10pm.
If you would like to RSVP for the hui, please fill in our online registration form as shown to the right.

Sustainable Salons NZ
Founded in Australia in 2015 and now expanding their services to Auckland, Sustainable Salons is collecting waste from salons to reduce waste going to landfill. The waste which is picked up includes paper, plastics, metals like aluminium foils, hair for wig making, chemicals, razors, tools and more. Sustainable Salons is also giving back to the community through their support of KiwiHarvest and food waste reduction. Devon Tong from Sustainable Salons NZ will be speaking about the comprehensive resource recovery service for hair salons in New Zealand.
Mint Innovation Company
Mint Innovation is developing recovery processes that use inexpensive chemicals and proprietary microorganisms to bind and concentrate specific metals under environmentally benign conditions. Jason Herbert will be giving a presentation explaining the incredible innovation on extracting base and precious metals from E-waste by using biometallurgy processes in their lab.
