Upcycled Offices

The Lookout administration offices

In 2015, the Visitors Centre at EcoMatters (formally known as The Sustainable Living Centre) moved down the hill to the EcoHouse at 1 Olympic Place, New Lynn. Sustainable Interior Designer, Jane Ingle from As The Crow Flies, was tasked with renovating and repurposing the old SLC building into the new administration offices for EcoMatters. The Lookout, as it is now fondly referred to by the EcoMatters team, is an office space that beautifully reflects EcoMatters’ values of sustainability, recycling and waste minimization. Jane’s upcycled design used recycled materials wherever possible. Timber, generously provided by Sustainable Coastlines, came from used cable reels and was repurposed to create a unique feature wall. An old metal conveyor bench and used matai floorboards, created a large shared desk in the main room.

Jane explains, “My aim was to create a healthy, functional and contemporary space whilst causing minimal impact on the environment. Another key driver was to showcase sustainable practices.”

When new materials were needed, products with environmental credentials were given preference. Resene‘s, Environmental Choice paint was used throughout, and Bona Naturale floor sealant by Look Floors provided a stunning and practical finish to the floorboards. The latest water-saving toilet was kindly supplied by Universal Plumbing Plus. Gorgeous textiles by Warwick Fabrics were used to upholster a seating area, creating a warm and inviting space for staff and visitors to relax. All of these quality products were generously donated by their suppliers to help create an inspired office space that minimised its environmental impact.

The EcoMatters team are very happy with the dynamic, beautiful and functional office environment Jane has created, and are keen to show off the finished space to the curious public. If you are keen to experience Jane Ingle’s environmentally conscience renovations first hand, make a time to pop into the EcoMatters office and see what can be achieved with upcycled materials.
