A scenic picnic and cafe cycle trail
Puketāpapa is a great area to explore on bike.
This map profiles a number of suggested cycling routes around Mt Roskill, Three Kings and Hillsborough, with sections suitable for young families, through to more confident, on-road cyclists. There are a number of bike destinations with something for everyone, including parks and playgrounds, iconic Maunga, picnic spots, and some lovely cafes.
You’ll soon be able to find hard copies of the map at the EcoMatters Bike Hubs, the Bike Kitchen in Mt Roskill, at any Puketāpapa library or at participating cafes listed below. If your organisation or business would like to have hard copies of the map, please email your request to Brent at [email protected].

War Memorial ride
5km loop, flat off-road path
Fine for children aged 10 and above, although the War Memorial Park section by itself is suitable for all ages.

This is a challenging stretch involving some hill climbing, so don’t be afraid to walk with the bike if you need to. Suitable for those who are confident and fit, or those on e-bikes. Includes around 60 stairs as marked on the map, and we recommend doing this ride clockwise so you can walk down with your bike.
Pah Homestead ride
3km loop, on-road cycling
This is relatively flat, with large sections on quiet roads. Recommended for teenagers and above and confident riders. The lovely Pah Homestead Cafe and Monte Cecilia Park are great destinations for a coffee or picnic.
5km loop, on-road and off-road
This includes a steep section west of the Onehunga foreshore. There is also a lovely flat 1.5km section
around the newly developed Taumanu Reserve that is suitable for families with young children, with playgrounds and good picnic spots.
2km (one direction), shared path and on-road
This includes a steep but sealed section through Waikowhai Park, suitable for confident riders, e-bikes, or walking. The park and beach are great spots to picnic.
The Mt Roskill Bike Kitchen is a community based initiative fixing donated bikes and distributing them to families where they are needed. We don’t offer a certified bike mechanical repair service, but volunteer mechanics are on hand to give advice, help you fix your bike so you can learn how to keep your bike in good shape. There is a bike stand with tools available on site 24/7. Check out what is happening on the Facebook page before visiting.
