Silvia’s thoughts around using less, re-use and recyling.
Recycling, upcycling, making do and living a simple life is the mantra I try live my life by. I don't like wasting resources. If I want or need something my first question is: do I really need it? If the answer is yes, I go and search for 2nd hand, or upcycle existing materials into something new.
This means that sometimes I have to be patient, and the solution may be a little while away. For me this is way more satisfying than the instant gratification that had little thought or effort put into it.
Silvia has held workshops around re-use in Avondale and at EcoMatters. Together with Rosebank Primary children she built an elephant out of plastic waste for the 2017 Whau Arts festival. These are fun and engaging ways that she likes to use to bring awareness around waste and living more sustainably.
Currently she is involved in a new project setting up a community garden at Avondale's old Preschool.
