One thing in common in most of our campaigns, is plastic bags can always be found everywhere! As litter, in the water, on land or even packed around our lunch. We’re all guilty of using them, they are just too convenient to replace, it seems.
However, possibly as many as a trillion plastic bags are in circulation annually, which is leading to catastrophic problems to the environment and making our planet rather unattractive.
People worldwide seem to be using them as if they are going out of fashion, which we ultimately hope they do. A plastic bag can take between 400 to 1000 years to break down in the environment, meanwhile breaking down into smaller bits and spreading far and wide. Plastic is contaminating our soil, our ocean, our waterways and making its way into the food and animal web. Short term effects are already showing, long term effects look disastrous. While you may think you are doing a good deed by placing the bags in the recycling bin each week, most are left to become a pollution problem either way; through plants either burning or placing them in the landfill just like normal rubbish.
However not everyone is exercising recycling yet and more than often they dispose them into the normal bin leaving them to cover the surface of our beautiful environment.
So what do you do?
Paper bags have been an alternative but these take their toll on the environment too.
Find reusable bags which can be recycled in time and say no to plastic ones.
Find your local plastic plant and help increase the current 1% of plastic bags which actually make it there for recycling.
