Our regular (weekly) volunteer opportunities
Love Your Streams Day
Help bring health back to our urban streams by joining Pam or Gabi on a Love Your Streams Day!
These days happen every Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 3pm. As well as learning about the technicalities of stream restoration and monitoring, you will be sure to have a good time working with like minded people to keep our streams beautiful.
P.S you don’t need to do the whole day, you can arranage with either Pam or Gabi how long you are able to be there
The Native Plant Nursery
In 2016 EcoMatters started our very own Native Plant Nursery. It’s Project Manager Chrissy is doing an amazing job of establishing the nursery with 5 000 plants already on their journey to a restoration project. You can help Chrissy to pot these plants as they grow on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning 10am – 12pm. You’ll find out lots about native plants along the way.
The Bike Hub
The EcoMatters ‘Love your Bike’ hub is now open, Thur to Sun, 9am to 1pm. The Hub supports bikers by offering free advise and servicing for people wanting to learn more about cycling. it will also be reconditioning unwanted bikes, saving them from the scrap heap offerring them at affoidable prices to those in need. They would love to have some volunteers to help out during their hours of operation. Preferably, you will have some very basic knowledge about bikes (brakes, gear tuning, fixing flat tyres…basically!!), but some informal training. Feel free to pop in or email.
The Wesley Market
Be a Zero Waste Warrior at the Wesley Market. We’ve been delivering waste management at Wesley Market for two years, where we’ve helped reduce the waste from each market day by a massive 62.5 per cent, going from four 240-litre rubbish bins down to 1.5. As a volunteer you’ll get to see how this works on the ground, and help to manage the waste stations where rubbish is separated into food waste, compostable and recyclable. The market runs on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Wesley Community Centre 740 Sandringham Road Extn., Mount Roskill.
Gardening at the Centre
The EcoMatters Environment Centre in New Lynn is surrounded by gardens including natives, fruit trees and vegetables. It has been lovingly tended according to permaculture principles by Meg for over 10 years. Your help to maintain this exhibition and functioning garden would be much appreciated. I’m sure you’ll learn a thing or two along the way. The regular volunteer time is Wednesday 10am – 12pm. Or arrange with Meg for another time.
Other opportunities include:
- Weeding and planting bees
- Stream clean-ups and restoration events
- Waste minimisation projects
- Administration assistance in the office
- Research and sustainability projects
- Helping at our events, festivals and workshops
Let us know what interests you when you register. You will be rewarded with the best feeling ever, while you share your knowledge, develop skills & opportunities, and make a bunch of new friends while you’re at it. (Oh, and the chance to engage in epic chats over tea or coffee, in beautiful places deserves to be mentioned).
We are very proud to be able to offer internship opportunities at EcoMatters. This is an opportunity to really become a part of the team while honing your skills in a certain area of interest. There may be a particular project one of our Campaigns needs help with or we are open to working with you to discuss your area of study and how this could work in with what we are doing. We like to see this as a Win/Win benefiting EcoMatters and you. Topics may include Marketing, Administration, Research, IT (Information technology or Computer support) or we are open to suggestions.
We take in interns all year round for a range of areas though places are limited. We also take interns from all parts of the world so don’t let geography be an issue. If you are interested to find out more about how it all works, email Barbara at email@example.com
