Sustainability at work

Becoming sustainable is one of the biggest challenges facing businesses. So why wait for your boss or workmates to initiate green practises at work?

Ride share with a colleague or ride your bike and keep fit despite your desk job. Start a bokashi food scraps bin in the cafeteria, put the lunchroom newspapers in the recycling bin and set the printer to double side.

Every small step counts, check out these ideas too…

Water wise Smart businesses are becoming aware of the hidden costs of wasteful water use. Check the plumbing - slow leaking pipes can go unnoticed for years. The simple installation of low flow showerheads and flow restrictors in office showers can make a substantial difference. There are simple ways existing toilets can be retrofitted to use less water. Install a waterless urinal, they're low maintenance and relatively smell-free.

Energy efficiency Taking energy efficiency measures makes sound business sense. Conversion to eco bulbs such as CFLs and LEDs is a simple place to start. Asking staff to turn off their computers at the wall when they leave for the day is something everyone can do. Installing quality insulation (don't forget underfloor) regulates the office climate, reducing heating (and cooling) bills.

Office waste can come in many shapes and forms - from paper mountains to a gas guzzling vehicle fleet. But putting simple measures in place such as setting the printer to double side and choosing recycled copy paper is easy to do. Making business decisions that are based on the triple bottom line (ensuring business performance that is environmentally sound, socially responsible and economically viable) can empower staff. Each staff member will then be inspired to carry out 'green tasks' - making the process of becoming a sustainable business easier.

The ultimate green If your business is growing and you need to build new premises - or perhaps work for a construction company - do some research before you begin that new project. There are some incredible green buildings around the world - in New Zealand we're just scratching the surface. Check out the inspirational books on green building and renovation at the Sustainable Living Centre's growing eco library - you'll soon be awash with ideas. Our workshop programme often features seminars on green architecture and building with sustainable materials too.
